Kayaking Gear for Beginners: What You Actually Need

Kayaking gear lists balloon fast in catalogues. The truth: one item on the list can save your life, three make the day work, and the rest can wait. Start with the one.

Start with the lifejacket.

The Lifejacket: The One That Matters

  • Paddle Australia - the national peak body - recommends every paddler wear a lifejacket built to Australian Standard Level 50 or higher, at all times on the water. That's Outdoorsia's rule too.

  • The law sets minimums that differ by state - when you must wear one, what level, and the rules for kids. Check your state's maritime authority before you paddle.

  • Rules do change: Queensland's lifejacket laws changed on 1 December 2024, with sea and surf kayaks among the craft covered, and NSW has consulted on expanding its wear rules.

  • Fit matters as much as the label: snug, adjusted, and sized to you. Paddle Australia also warns that inflatable lifejackets aren't suitable for paddling - they give no buoyancy until someone inflates them.

  • Kids' rules are stricter everywhere, and a child's jacket must actually fit the child - an adult jacket on a small kid is flotation theatre.

The Three That Make the Day Work

Once the lifejacket's sorted, the rest is simple.

Paddle

Hire-grade is fine to start; if buying, lighter is the upgrade that matters, and correct length beats brand.

Paddle leash

A separated paddle is a stranded paddler - leash the paddle to the boat (not yourself) on open water, and take it off in surf, where it can tangle.

Dry bag

Phone, keys, first aid, spare layer. Several small dry bags beat one big one, and double-bagged rubbish bags work in a pinch.

Worth Having Early

  • Whistle attached to the lifejacket - Paddle Australia's recommended way to get attention.

  • Bailer or sponge (sit-ins), sun kit, water bottle with a clip, and footwear that can get wet. More in What to Wear Kayaking: Clothing, Sun and Footwear.

  • Phone in a waterproof pouch, worn on you - not in the hatch of a boat that's drifting away. The Kayak Day Trip Kit on our Resources page covers the rest.

What Can Wait

  • Rudders, fancy seats, fishing rigs, trolleys, GPS units - all real upgrades, none of them week-one.

  • For remote or offshore paddling later: a PLB or EPIRB, registered for free with AMSA - the national distress beacon authority.

What Beginners Overspend On

  • Carbon paddles for lake laps, electronics before skills, and "kayak packages" padded with accessories you'll never fit.

  • Spend the savings on the two things that compound: a properly fitted lifejacket and a lesson.

Get the lifejacket right first. Then practise the technique in How to Get Back in Your Kayak After You Capsize before you ever need to.
